Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has dismissed claims by Democratic Change Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua that the government plans to raise fuel prices to fund political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during President William Ruto’s tour of West Pokot County on Wednesday, Wandayi said fuel prices were determined through an established regulatory process overseen by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), rather than political directives. He maintained that politicians had no authority to arbitrarily change pump prices, rejecting suggestions that the government was preparing to increase petrol and diesel prices before EPRA announced its latest review.

Gachagua had claimed that motorists faced increases of KSh12 per litre for petrol and KSh9 for diesel. He accused the government of seeking additional revenue to finance political activities ahead of the next election.

Wandayi responded by pointing to international market conditions, including instability in parts of the Middle East, which has affected crude oil prices and shipping costs. He said Kenya had continued to secure petroleum supplies despite these disruptions.

The Energy Cabinet Secretary also accused Gachagua of seeking improper payments from petroleum companies while serving as Deputy President. The allegation escalated the dispute, shifting the exchange beyond fuel pricing policy to personal accusations between Gachagua and the Ruto administration.

Fuel prices remain a major concern for Kenyan households and businesses because they influence transport costs, food prices and inflation. Changes in the cost of petrol, diesel and kerosene can affect the prices of goods and services across the economy.

EPRA was expected to announce the latest prices through a media briefing rather than its usual written statement, adding to anticipation surrounding the review.

During the previous pricing cycle, which ran from 15 September to 14 October 2026, maximum retail prices in Nairobi remained unchanged. Petrol sold at KSh214.03 per litre, diesel at KSh217.86 and kerosene at KSh191.38.
