British authorities are expected to conduct a post-mortem examination on Friday to establish the cause of death of Kenyan nursing student Nelbert Kipruto Rirei, whose body was recovered from the River Cam in Cambridge.

The examination could be delayed if further forensic tests are required. Its findings are expected to help investigators determine how the student died and clarify the circumstances surrounding his death. If the procedure proceeds as scheduled, the body could be released to the family early next week. Relatives may also be allowed to view Nelbert before the formal release, although authorities have yet to confirm the arrangements.

Police are continuing to investigate his final known movements, including reviewing available CCTV footage to establish where he went and whether he was accompanied by anyone in his final hours. The inquiry remains open, and investigators have not established how he entered the river.

The coroner is examining several possible explanations for the death, including whether Nelbert experienced a sudden medical emergency before entering the water. However, no official conclusion has been reached, and the cause of death remains unknown pending further examination.

Investigators have also faced challenges obtaining information about Nelbert's medical history. Authorities reportedly struggled to identify his registered general practitioner during the early stages of the inquiry. Members of the Kenyan community subsequently helped locate the relevant details and pass them to investigators, allowing officials to review his medical records.

Nelbert's body is being held at Addenbrooke's Hospital as investigative procedures continue. The information provided by community members is expected to assist authorities in considering the available evidence before reaching any formal conclusions.

Questions remain about the events leading up to his disappearance. According to accounts from people familiar with the case, Nelbert failed to return home after work and was reportedly dropped off at a shop in Cambridge at around 9pm.

Later that evening, a missed call believed to have come from him was found on a friend's phone. Concern grew the following morning when attempts to contact him were unsuccessful and he had still not returned home. His roommate subsequently reported him missing to police.

The discovery of his body in the River Cam brought the search for the missing student to a tragic end. His death has left family members, friends and members of the Kenyan community in the UK waiting for an explanation of what happened.
